Sierra Oaks Middle School

This trimester class is designed to help you discover and develop your talents as a leader. Everyone has the potential to lead, and every day provides you with opportunities and possibilities to lead. In this class you will be actively engaged in activities such as group discussions, reflections/journaling, planning school dances, spirit rallies, fundraisers, spirit days, and school and community. As you learn how to integrate your leadership skills into your everyday life you will become more confident in your potential and your abilities as a leader.

Lead by Middle School Students to help develop skills in yearbook production by providing experiences in selected aspects of yearbook production.  Students learn basic principles of yearbook production and develop skills that include writing copy, captions and headlines; digital photography; desktop publishing and using appropriate technology tools for media production.

This is your chance to learn how to play a cool instrument and be part of a fun and engaging community. You can choose to play either flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, or xylophone. With my guidance, you will be able to read music, perform songs on your instrument of choice, and participate in group concerts to share your accomplishments with the school. And with your effort, we can cultivate a rewarding experience where you and your friends can create an amazing, musical performance. 

Middle school is a huge and wonderful change!  There are so many new friends to make and more subjects to learn about.  AVID is here to help make sure that the transition is as smooth as possible.  We will cover topics like how to build positive relationships, organization, note taking, and goal setting.  An introduction to this class is currently a requirement for 6th grade.  As a 7th or 8th grader, you may be eligible to sign up for for a more indepth class in order to prepare you for high school and beyond.

This  isn’t just another class, it’s an adventure. You’ll build real-life skills like making friends, working with a team, and communicating with confidence. Through games, challenges, and fun activities, you’ll learn more about yourself and the people around you. We’ll take the learning outside with field trips like rock climbing, snowshoeing, backpacking, and camping. You’ll get to explore nature while building skills you can use in school, at home, and in the future. You’ll also work with your teacher and college mentors to set goals, figure out what careers might interest you, and learn how to take responsibility for your own success. Every week, you’ll write in a journal, and your teacher or mentor will write back, kind of like having your own personal coach. If you’re picked for Green Light GO, you’re in for awesome adventures and experiences.

In this elective, you'll collaborate and plan exciting events like the Career Fair, Culture Day, and Read Across America Week. You'll boost Cougar Pride with monthly character trait skits and presentations for younger classes, pop-up games for students to have a positive competition, and other school-wide events.  Along the way, you’ll strengthen your AVID skills—like planning, organizing, communicating, and working as a team, while learning about a variety of careers that these skills will support—to help make Sierra Oaks a more connected and spirited place.
